Emergency decree jailings

April 22, 2009

The Bangkok Post (22 April 2009: “Court approves continued detention of UDD leaders”) reports that the continuing imposition of the emergency decree has permitted the Bangkok Criminal Court to approved the continued detention of three senior UDD leaders – Veera Musigapong, Nattawut Saikur and Weng Tojirakarn – for another week.

The Post also notes that “three members of red-shirt group in Chiang Mai surrendered to police after being charged with instigating chaos…. The three denied all charges and said they would only testify in court.”

Meanwhile, at the Nation (23 April 2009: “Crackdown was unavoidable: PM”), the prime minister is again reported as saying that the state of emergency “would be kept only until the situation stabilised, which would be just a ‘matter of days’.”
