RWB condemns the censorship of red shirt media

April 23, 2009

Reporters Without Borders (23 April 2009: “State of emergency used to censor pro-opposition media”) comments on the wave of censrship that followed the Songkhran uprising. While condemning violence, RWB states that it “deplores the censorship, closure and banning of many media linked to the opposition United Front for Democracy against Dictatorship (UDD)…”.

RWB said that if any of the media censored or closed made “calls for violence” then they “must be punished by the courts and not in an arbitrary fashion by the police.” It added that the Democrat Party-led government “… cast doubt on the desire to ‘reconcile the different political parties’ professed by the government when it took office. We call for the lifting of the state of emergency, which just blocks access to news and information and encourages a climate of fear.”
