Thai Netizen on the Computer Crimes Act

May 26, 2009

On 26 May 2009, the Thai Netizen Network (TNN) (เครือข่ายพลเมืองเน็ต) released a statement about the uses and misuses of the Computer Crimes Act of B.E. 2550. They examine the law itself as well as the status of the cases against Suwicha Thakor and Chiranuch Premchaiyaporn.  TNN calls for “the authorities concerned to treat the cases with careful consideration on the principles of human rights and humanity. As the cases are related to the right to hold opinion, political expression and press freedom, which are guaranteed under the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, these cases are distinctive from other ordinary criminal offences and that deserve careful treatment with the consideration of human rights.”

TNN’s linking of the importance of securing freedom of speech with broader human rights concerns is very significant.
