An update on succession

Every now and again there is a debate about succession and whether the crown prince will really get the position. Of course, we can never know for sure until the day it happens. Even so, the debates continue in the blogs.

As PPT mentioned previously here, we admit to some bemusement regarding the continual discussion of succession. Much of it seems to be promoted by wishful thinking on the part of those who believe that an unmarried and apparently jovial Sirindhorn would be preferable to the brooding, unpredictable and womanizing Vajiralongkorn.

Now the some of the debate seems resolved at the Bangkok Pundit in comments on the blog “Succession: The White Elephant in the room”. One reader notes Paul Handley’s comment in The King Never Smiles about the king naming Vajiralongkorn as his successor in 1972 and royal critic Somsak Jeamteerasakul agrees that the king did name his son as his successor in 1972.

Somsak has this quote: “ในกาลปัจจุบันนี้ประชาชนทั้งหลายตลอดถึงชาวต่างประเทศทั่วไปในโลก ย่อมพากันนิยมยกย่องว่า สมเด็จพระเจ้าลูกยาเธอเจ้าฟ้าวชิราลงกรณ ทรงอยู่ในฐานะที่จะรับราชสมบัติปกครองราชอาณาจักรสืบสนองพระองค์ สมเด็จพระเจ้าลูกยาเธอพระองค์นั้นเล่า ก็ทรงพระเจริญมายุบรรลุนิติภาวะ ทรงพระวีรภาพและพระสติปัญญาสามารถที่จะรับภาระของแผ่นดินตามพระอิสริยศักดิ์ ได้ ถึงสมัยที่จะสถาปนาเป็นองค์รัชทายาท ควรจะทรงอนุวัตรให้เป็นไปตามธรรมนิยมและขัตติยราชประเพณี…”.
