In an earlier and updated post, PPT briefly noted rumors that Darunee Charnchoensilpak had been put in solitary confinement. This is now confirmed in a Prachatai article (14 September 2009: “Corrections Dept asked to explain Da Torpedo’s solitary confinement” and 12 September 2009: “ทนาย ‘ดา ตอร์ปิโด’ จี้ราชทัณฑ์แจงการกักเดี่ยว-เลือกปฏิบัติ”).
Darunee’s lawyer has complained to the Corrections Department about “discrimination against his client, including putting her in solitary confinement as a punishment and labeling her as a lèse majesté convict.” He also said that he believed warders were listening in when he talked with Darunee and “prying into confidential documents,” preventing confidentiality.
He wants to know why Darunee is being punished by solitary confinement and why she must wear a new name tag that “identifies her as a lèse majesté convict” and thus exposing her to “hatred from her fellow inmates and warders.” The lawyer adds that the “prison’s practice of having inmates wear different uniforms according to the severity of their punishment amounts to discrimination.”
It seems that 18 years is insufficient punishment for some authorities. PPT suspects that this harassment in a bid to have her drop her plans for an appeal. The royals and their protectors dislike having these matters come to court – even the closed court that was used in Darunee’s case – and receive publicity. Admissions of guilt are all that they want.
