The old gang and getting Thaksin

October 29, 2009

As PPT mentioned in its post regarding Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva publicly making an appearance with PAD associated media (ASTV/Manager), the various political machinations of late (Chavalit and his generals, death rumors, Hun Sen, etc.) have caused the Democrat Party-led government to call on its royalist and anti-Thaksin allies. In doing that, the government appears to be paying its debts by again demonstrating its anti-Thaksin credentials for its allies.

Apparently fearing a realignment of the political landscape, Prem Tinsulanonda, the aged general in charge of the king’s Privy Council was the first to attack Chavalit. The middle class media then led the way in coming to the government’s defense against Hun Sen.

Now the government is using its resources to again demonstrate its anti-Thaksin credentials. Its first salvo related to moves aimed at getting Thaksin’s police rank and royal decorations removed. Another move has been to immediately push ahead on finding scapegoats in the police for the events of 7 October 2008 that left one PAD demonstrator dead and several with serious injuries.

Presumably, in this bitter chess match, the government will also seek to accelerate charges against Chavalit and former premier Somchai Wongsawat. Perhaps Thaksin will show up in Cambodia, seeking a further check against the government?
