No birthday speech

November 30, 2009

One of PPT’s questions has been answered. Yesterday we asked if the king will appear or be released from hospital for his birthday. We observed that his hospitalization has been long – now more than 10 weeks – and noted that it is almost 3 weeks since the monarch was said to be well on the road to recovery. Today the Bangkok Post (30 November 2009: “King’s birthday speech postponed”) reports that the “traditional birthday-eve address by His Majesty the King, scheduled for Dec 4, has been postponed indefinitely…”.

At the same time, “The office of His Majesty’s Principal Private Secretary also announced today the postponement of the annual parade of soldiers, scheduled for Dec 2, to celebrate His Majesty’s birthday. It did not specify why or announce any alternative dates.” The statement from the Office “said that His Majesty will preside over a morning ceremony at the Grand Palace on his birthday. The ceremony would be attended by members of the royal family, government officials and members of parliament.”

So again the Office of His Majesty’s Principal Private Secretary is being frugal with information about the king’s health and this is likely to prompt further speculation and rumor.

Reuters has a report here.
