CPJ on Attacks on the Press in Thailand

February 16, 2010

The Committee to Protect Journalists has released their analysis of press freedom, or the lack thereof, in Thailand during 2009.  Their analysis is sharp and thorough, and PPT recommends a close reading.  For now, we note that they report that 2,000 websites were blocked in 2009 for allegedly violating lèse majesté laws.

Their summary of the precarious position of journalists is chilling:

“Thai media were caught in the middle of a political conflict that entered its fourth year of destabilizing antigovernment street demonstrations and tough government responses. Both sides in the conflict—supporters and opponents of exiled former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra—threatened journalists, some of whom were openly aligned to factions taking part in the protest movements.”
