Paying for the military’s support

March 23, 2010

PPT points out an excellent piece in the Bangkok Post (23 March 2010). As the article points out, the military brass has fully backed the Abhisit Vejjajiva government – that’s why PPT calls it a “military-backed government” – and it was a government that the military put together after supporting by action and inaction the People’s Alliance for Democracy in 2008. Maybe we should call the throwing out of an elected government and replacing it with Abhisit’s coalition a “silent coup.” The military brass are critical also to the monarchy’s position and see themselves as the defenders of that particular manufactured faith.

Like the military junta-appointed and palace-backed government led by privy councilor Surayudh Chulanont following the 2006 coup, the Abhisit government is now shoveling funds the military’s way. All that purchasing will allow for the brass to gain considerable wealth over the next decade as nothing is likely to be done to curb huge corruption.
