Further updated: Interpol, Kasit and Thaksin

August 30, 2010

The Nation has a short story regarding the recent activities of Minister for Hunting Thaksin, Kasit Piromya. PPT is still waiting to hear if sometime Foreign Minister Kasit was he charged by police for his involvement in the People’s Alliance for Democracy 2008 occupation of Bangkok’s airports, like his PAD colleagues last week.

In the meantime though, as Thaksin Shinawatra hunter, according to The Nation, Kasit has been telling Montenegro’s Foreign Minister Milan Roćen “about political situation in Thailand and the Thai court’s verdicts against Thaksin.” PPT would love to see the letters as Kasit is always highly emotional on Thaksin. Kasit tells the media that Rocen “had informed me twice in his letters that the action against Khun Thaksin will depend on the Interpol…”.

This comes as Kasit is due to meet Roćen. The only reason why Kasit is there is because Montenegro provided Thaksin with citizenship.

Then this intriguing tidbit: “As of now, Interpol has not yet put Thaksin’s name on its wanted list, reportedly because it believed the rulings on Thaksin’s corruption and abuse of power charges are politically motivated.” Has the Minister for Hunting Thaksin been unable to convince Interpol?

Update 1: There’s a non-denial in the Bangkok Post about Kasit’s visit, where Deputy Prime Minister Suthep Thaugsuban tries to say that Kasit is not in Montenegro hunting Thaksin. He’s just there…. presenting “evidence” to the Montenegrin government against Thaksin…. So he really is hunting down Thaksin. Why even deny the obvious?

Update 2: This gets more weird as Suthep is now quoted as saying: “the visit of Foreign Minister Kasit Piromya to Montenegro has nothing to do with the effort to seek extradition of fugitive former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra.” He then goes back and says that it is about providing the correct information to that government about Thaksin. So the same non-denial, only stronger. Why? It just makes him look dumb. The same outlet reports that Kasit didn’t request Thaksin’s extradition – so that’s how “hunting Thaksin” is defined! At the same time, “Kasit declined to disclose details of the issue to reporters…”.
