Further updated: Voting

August 30, 2010

From Bangkok Post

It is now known that the Democrat Party won the majority of seats in the local elections on Sunday. However, as the Bangkok Post map shows, there are still swathes of support for Puea Thai. As expected the People’s Alliance for Democracy New Politics Party made a very poor showing.

There were 256 seats and the Democrat Party won 210 on Sunday. In July 2006, according to a Bloomberg report at the time, they took 176 of 255 district seats. Back then it was Thai Rak Thai in government, and they took 71 district seats.

The New Politics Party won no seats.

The elections were not without some controversy. The following video reports are in Thai, but viewers will get the picture. The idea of votes being delivered in plastic bags is an interesting one.

Update 1: Bangkok Pundit has a useful analysis. Note distinctions between city and district elections.

Update 2: The New Politics Party claims the above clips show some kind of graft in the elections, but say that they won’t complain….
