Update on Surachai and Somyos

August 24, 2011

The Bangkok Post reports that yet another bail request for Somyos Prueksakasemsuk and Surachai Sae Dan (Danwattananusorn) has been rejected. Both are accused of lese majeste.

This time, Puea Thai party parliamentarians were prepared to use their parliamentary positions as a bail guarantee for the two. Despite this, bail was refused.

The judge reasoned – if that is the correct word – “that Mr Surachai is facing other lese majeste charges, while for Mr Somyos, the court upheld its previous decision to reject a bail request.”

Interestingly, the judge was prepared to allow bail for “Thawatchai Iamnak, charged with having explosive materials in his possession…”. Makes you think about the standards used to judge the severity of charges.
