Military, monarchy, military, monarchy….

1 10 2010

The Siamese twins of Thailand’s authoritarianism have just reaffirmed their bonding. In The Nation, the new Army chief General Prayuth Chan-ocha reaffirmed his vow to protect the monarchy. He also “lauded [retiring chief General] Anupong [Paojinda] for his loyalty and efforts to protect the Royal family.”

PPT would expect nothing else from Prayuth, a hard line royalist. Interestingly, though, there was “a heavy presence of military guards around the Army headquarters during the ceremony.” Prayuth is likely to be a political neanderthal and in favor of increased repression of red shirts, who he seems to believe are a republican army bent on trampling his beloved royal deity.*

*The definition of deity at Wikipedia says this: “a postulated preternatural or supernatural immortal being, who may be thought of as holy, divine, or sacred, held in high regard, and respected by believers…”. Prayuth seems to be a believer.
