Updated: Chiranuch honors and fears

2 02 2011

The News & Knowledge Entrepreneurs project is a partnership with the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation and can be found at this page. Its goal is to “advance citizenship and strengthen democratic society – by identifying and supporting news & knowledge innovations that better inform, connect, and engage people around the world.”

As part of this, it elects  Fellows. There are now almost 100 Ashoka Fellows in the News & Knowledge community.

The project has just made this announcement: “We are very pleased to announce that Chiranuch [Premchaiporn] has just been elected an Ashoka Fellow, supported by the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation.”

The downside is that in making the announcement, the project has to note that Chiranuch is about to go to court on a string of politically-inspired charges related to lese majeste and computer crimes.

Chiranuch’s trial is set to begin on 4 February, and PPT imagines that almost everyone has long forgotten that Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva once claimed to have sorted out the “misunderstanding” on Chiranuch’s case.

Update: FACT has the details of Chiranuch’s trial posted and calls for support for her during the trial.
