Updates on two lese majeste cases

23 03 2011

Prachatai has two short updates on two ongoing lese majeste cases.

On 21 March 2011, Prachatai says the Criminal Court denied bail for Ampol Tangnopakul, the 61 year-old man charged with sending SMS messages to key government figures in 2010 that allegedly constitute lese majeste and offenses under the 2007 Computer Crimes Act.

His case is scheduled for late September. He has been detained without bail since 18 January 2011, and is reportedly  suffering from cancer of the mouth.

In the second update, Prachatai reports that Tanthawut Taweewarodomkul, who has already been convicted, went to the Appeals Court on 21 March 2011. His lawyers had 1.3 million baht in cash as guarantee for Tanthawut who was sentenced 13 years in jail, while the case was appealed.

As usual, his request for bail was denied, on the usual grounds that the charges are “serious” and that he “might flee.”

In both cases, lawyers will petition for bail again.
