Another proposal to fix the elections for the ruling elite

12 04 2011

The Bangkok Post reports on yet another proposal that will seek to fix, bend, and direct any election results in favor of the Democrat Party (at least in the short term).

The hopelessly politicized “political reform panel has suggested appointing a new Constitution Drafting Committee to revamp the charter and change the system of appointing the prime minister. Under its proposal, the leader of the political party which wins the highest number of party-list seats would become the prime minister, said Sombat Thamrongthanyawong, the government-appointed committee chairman after a meeting with Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva at Government House yesterday.”

Everyone knows that in recent elections, the Democrat Party did better on the party list. The elite seems bent (and look at the British meaning at 3) on changing as many rules as possible in order to disadvantage parties that receive high popular votes. Their efforts are incessant and deeply troubling for anyone interested in electoral democracy.
