Lese majeste victim Surachai speaks

30 11 2011

At the Bangkok Post reports on an interview with lese majeste victim Surachai Danwattananusorn. He repeated that he denied the lese majeste charges against him.

Already in jail for 9 months on three charges of lese majeste, he acknowledges that the “best way to deal with similar lawsuits is to confess and hope for a royal pardon.”

Surachai is 69 years old and it is clear that if he does not plead guilty he will die in jail. He says:

Better follow [fellow lese majeste defendants] Boonyuen Prasertying and Suvicha Thakhor…. They were in prison for less than two years after seeking a royal pardon. But Daranee [Charncherngsilapakul, another defendant facing the same charge] has been in here for three years already _ still waiting for a verdict [on her appeal bid].

After 9 months in jail, only a couple of 16 prosecution witnesses have testified and it is clear that to the case is being deliberately dragged out to make him confess. The next hearing has been postponed until June.
