PPT has received from several sources an urgent appeal from labor groups in Thailand who are campaigning for the release of Somyos Prueksakasemsuk, currently on trial for lese majeste offenses. PPT has recently placed an unofficial copy of the charge sheet in the case here.

On 30 April 2012 the Workers Organisation Of Democracy (WOD) and other labor groups will organize protests in front of the UN offices and the Parliament in Bangkok. They will again submit letters to officers of the UN and Parliament calling for the right to bail, the release of Somyos and dropping his lese majeste case.

They request that international groups – trades unions, NGOs and other comrades and friends organize similar solidarity actions on 30 April or during May Day rallies and events.

They also request that comrades and friends raise Somyos’ case with the Thai authorities by organizing a protest and submitting a letter to the local Thai Embassy.

Details here.

On 25 April, Somyos talked briefly with a labor activist from Pakistan who came to observe his trial. The activist said:

Somyot said that it is not me who is on trial it is the freedom of expression. I am fighting for all Thai people.
