Silent oath-taking

2 11 2012

The Bangkok Post has a short report on ministers finally being sworn-in after the reshuffle with an oath-taking ceremony in the king’s suite at Sirirat Hospital. The oddity of the ceremony is noted:

Deputy Prime Minister and Education Minister Phongthep Thepkanchana said the Royal Household Bureau informed the cabinet members beforehand that His Majesty the King would not speak at the oath-taking ceremony.

The king remaining silent is unusual. In the past he has made sometimes rambling speeches, usually urging the ministers to do their duty and to be honest. As he has aged and his health deteriorated, these speeches have become hoarse and increasingly incoherent. Silence is new and probably reflects his poor health. Government critics may choose another interpretation.
