The coup begins in Thailand

3 11 2013

Filming… Sorry, but we couldn’t resist:

The Coup, from director John Erick Dowdle and starring Owen Wilson, Pierce Brosnan and Lake Bell, has begun shooting on location in Thailand.

But what better place to shoot a film on a military takeover. The usual estimate of military interventions is something like 20, although we would exclude both the 1932 Revolution and 1933 Boworadej Rebellion as putsches. Some 10 interventions have been successful, with the latest having been the palace-military coup of 2006.

In terms of movies and politics, we still think that watching The Ugly American has some merit, not least for the attack on the car scene and Kukrit Pramoj’s role:

Perhaps oddly, we also like Bangkok Dangerous for the brief comments on politics and future conflict:

In the midst of a declining political stability and Thaksin’s Shinawatra’s apparent desire to relive 2005-6, PPT just can’t resist our Sunday light post of the past. We promise something more serious later in the day.
