In a quite remarkable report, the Bangkok Post has stated that the anti-democrats, the new “friends” of the farmers, have “forced the Commerce Ministry to postpone its planned auction of 240,000 tonnes of rice via the Agricultural Futures Exchange of Thailand.”
Readers will recall that the farmers have generally been demonstrating that they want to be paid for their rice. The anti-democrats jumped on this and complained loud and long that they were the “friends” of these farmers and supported them in getting their owed payments.
However, when the Commerce Ministry tries to sell rice, “Tinnakorn Ornpathum, a co-leader with the People’s Democratic Reform Committee (PDRC), led a large group of supporters from Lumpini Park to the Commerce Ministry in a show of support for farmers [sic.] camping out at the government department demanding payment for grains pledged under the state rice scheme.”
Tinnakorn protesters “urged officials to stop working and leave the ministry” and “cut electricity to the ministry.”
PPT is baffled. Preventing the state selling the rice is hardly likely to get the payments for the farmers. It is clear that the anti-democrats are no allies of rice farmers.
