Impeachment

8 05 2015

It is important to record the retroactive impeachment of two politicians and an official in cases related to the earlier impeachment of Yingluck Shinawatra.

The three were impeached by the military dictatorship’s puppet assembly for their alleged “involvement in a fraudulent rice sale.”

Former Minister of Commerce Boonsong Teriyapirom, former Deputy Minister of Commerce Poom Sarapol, and former Director of the Department of Foreign Trade Manus Soiploy were caught up in the rice subsidy program that was seized on by anti-democrats and then the military when they mobilized to oust the elected government, declaring the program corrupt.

The National Anti-Corruption Commission (NACC) claimed that the “trio oversaw rice sales that were falsely billed as a Government-to-Government (G2G) trade with China.” It alleged that the rice was “eventually sold at a low price to Thai firms with close ties to the ruling Pheu Thai Party, before being distributed in Thai markets…”.

The NACC joined the anti-democrats in claiming that “mismanagement and corruption in the rice program cost the state more than 500 billion baht in damages.”

It remains unclear whether the NACC can ever produce evidence for its claims that would hold up in an independent court. As the Financial Times commented some time ago, about the Yingluck show trial, “the military government has dealt in anecdote and innuendo. So far, it has not proved the scheme was anything other than a policy it did not like. This looks like political vengeance, not the rule of law.”

Several other impeachment cases remain in process in a politicized effort to destroy the so-called Thaksin regime.
