Just days after being criticized for abducting a Neo-Democracy Movement student activist, military goons have been at it again.
Most readers will have seen the widely available reports on the abduction of Chakraphon Phonla-o, aka Kankan.
It is stated that at 10:30 am on 25 January 2016, “military officers in plainclothes abducted … [the] pro-democracy student activist…”. He was said to have been “taken to Nawamintharachini Army Base in Chonburi Province.”
Activists “issued statements condemning the authorities over the arbitrary arrest of Chakraphon Phonla-o and calling for his immediate release, saying that the abduction is an example of the barbaric use of power of the Thai military junta.”
At around 3:30 pm, Chakraphon “was set free, two hours after his friends went to report the abduction to the police at Saen Suk Subdistrict Police Station.”
At Khaosod, Chakraphon’s abduction is confirmed by police: “a combined force of military and police officers took away Chakkrapan from his residence, though he preferred to describe the incident as an ‘invitation’ to talk.”
That is, a Mafia-like invitation that cannot be refused.
Confirming that this was the action of thugs above the law, a police spokesman stated: “We didn’t do anything to him. It’s only attitude adjustment…. This is not an arrest. There’s no arrest warrant.”
Goons acting as thugs with impunity. The point is to harass, threaten, intimidate and show who’s boss.
