Lese majeste terrorism

2 11 2016

With justifiable fears about the death of the king and a still shaky succession, the military junta has been engaged in a lese majeste terror campaign against political opponents and plain, ordinary citizens.

15, 20 or more cases have been brought over the past couple of weeks. The junta is highlighting itself as loyal to the hilt, chasing international media firms to support its reign of terror. It says it is hunting these nasty people everywhere. It is supporting social media vigilantism.

The Bangkok Post reports on a police account that says “[f]ifteen people have been arrested for allegedly offending the monarchy over the past two weeks since…”. It adds that “Deputy police spokesman Piyaphan Pingmuang said they are among 25 people accused of lese majeste acts…” in the period.

Pol Maj Gen Piyaphan also said that “lese majeste cases stood at 167 before Oct 13.”
