What’s the point?

1 09 2019

We posted on the military-backed regime’s efforts to silence debate on Gen Prayuth Chan-ocha’s oath that excluded any mention of the junta-defined constitution.

Sompong Amornvivat of the Puea Thai Party reportedly stated that “the opposition would demand an open debate, claiming the people want to know the truth about the prime minister’s omission of an important part of the oath.”

That’s true, but then he reportedly went on to give “assurances that opposition MPs would exercise caution and would not touch on the issue of the monarchy.”

So what’s the point of debating the oath? The king is central to the issue. More significantly, the king has doubled-down on his push to move Thailand from a semi-democracy led by royalists to a neo-feudal kingdom.
