Updated: Germany warns Vajiralongkorn

27 10 2020

Germany’s Foreign Minister Heiko Maas has made his government’s position clear. He has warned King Vajiralongkorn:

If Thai King … Vajiralongkorn breaks the law on German soil, there will be immediate consequences, Foreign Minister Heiko Maas said on Monday.

“We have not only been looking into that in recent weeks, but on a regular basis,” Maas said at a news conference. “If there are things we consider to be illegal, that will have immediate consequences.”

Such a statement must be infuriating to the king. After all, for his whole life, the king has always got what he wanted. To have a mere minister warn him must be something he has never previously experienced. With protesters also demanding that his power and influence be reigned in, the king must be not just angry but suffering cognitive dissonance. This makes him dangerous as solving this psychological state means an “alteration in one of the attitudes, beliefs or behaviors to reduce the discomfort and restore balance.”

In his preference for carousing in and “ruling” from Germany, he’s the one who has caused the German government to warn him. […]
