Ratchapin Chanjaroen was accused and then, reportedly, charged with failing to stand for the king’s anthem in a cinema on 15 June 2008. Her case was first reported by Time Up Thailand.
Instead of standing for the royal anthem, Ratchapin pointed her feet at the screen and shouted words. It was reported that she suffered a mental illness, and, according to the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, this was confirmed at her trial by several psychiatrists.
On 19 October 2009 she was sentenced to three years, reduced by half for a guilty plea. It is not clear whether she served the sentence, but when on probation was required to seek medical treatment for her schizophrenia.
