ASEAN Parliamentarians for Human Rights has “called on the international community to monitor the ongoing legal case in the Constitutional Court that could lead to a dissolution of the Move Forward Party (MFP).” It also “urged the international community to take preventive actions to discourage what it described as the use of judicial instruments to dissolve the party.”

APHR said that dissolving the party over Article 112 “would risk encroaching on the prerogative of the legislative branch and blatantly disregards the principle of the separation of powers.” It stated:

“By preventing parliamentarians from deliberating on the law that is not in line with international human rights standards, the court undermines the very idea of democracy as it puts that specific law beyond the reach of any amendments…”

Meanwhile, the US Senate Foreign Relations Committee Chairman has “expressed concern” over the possible dissolution. Committee chair Ben Cardin said i:

“I am deeply concerned by developments in Thailand on the potential dissolution of the Move Forward Party.

“I urge Thai authorities to ensure fair treatment for MFP and respect (for) the will of the many Thai people who cast their votes in support of MFP candidates.”
