A group of activists and protesters rang in the New Year at a gathering in front of the Bangkok Remand Prison in support of political prisoners remaining in detention and to demand their release.
The gathering took place from 17.00 on 31 December 2024 – 5.00 on 1 January 2025. Food was handed out while musicians performed on the footpath. Protesters wrote messages to detainees. Some also gave speeches demanding release of those detained on charges relating to political participation.
According to Thai Lawyers for Human Rights (TLHR), 33 people are currently detained on charges relating to political expression or participation in protests. Of this number, 24 are detained on a royal defamation charge, 15 of whom are detained pending trial or appeal.
