Royalists now control almost all institutions in the country. In this position for some time, university administrations have acted against students and staff they see as anti-royal.
A recent case in point is reported by Thai Lawyers for Human Rights. What follows is our poor translation and interpretation of the report.

“Kong” or Ukkrit Santiprasitkul is a 24 year old student of the Faculty of Law at Ramkhamhaeng University who has been imprisoned since 13 February 2024, after the Court of Appeals confirmed his sentence on an Article 112 charge. He was originally sentenced in 2022., when he was sentenced to a total prison time of 7 years and 6 months on several lese majeste and computer crimes charges.
Ramkhamhaeng students have appealed to the Committee on the Law, Justice and Human Rights of the House of Representatives for Ukkrit to be able to take his final examinations while in prison.
This comes after the royalists comprising Ramkhamhaeng University Council refused this, without providing any reason or justification.
While members of the Ministry of Higher Education, the Department of Corrections and the Student Council of Ramkhamhaeng University attended the meeting with the parliamentary committee, no representative of Ramkhamhaeng University turned up.
The administration “explained” that they had more important matters to attend to: a rehearsal ceremony for the graduation and “practicing for graduates” who will receive their diplomas from a royal delegate from the Privy Council.
Interestingly, the Deputy Director-General of the Department of Corrections confirmed the department’s support for the educational rights of inmates, specifying that the exams can be arranged within prisons nationwide. In fact, laws and regulations permit such examinations.
Ramkhamhaeng University administrators have been again been called to meet with the parliamentary committee.
The case illustrates how royalism allows adherents to ignore laws, regulations, human rights, etc. when there is a view that royalists are doing the king’s work. In this, university administrators mirror the behavior of judges and others in a vile judicial system.
