Arnon should be set free

28 09 2025

On 26 September 2025, Arnon Nampa clocked up two years in prison for daring to call for reform of politics and of the monarchy.

His daring and that of others in the monarchy reform movement demonstrated how the monarchy and the regime around it remains in place only through violence and political repression.

Thai Enquirer wrote on Arnon to mark this milestone of repression. Most of the cowed mainstream media was silent, either in support of repression and through warped notions of loyalty. Some, perhaps, are just timid and wish to stay away from 112. They are certainly told to leave the topic alone.

Arnon is not just a reformer, he is also a human rights lawyer. The report says Arnon “has been held in Bangkok Remand Prison following convictions in ten Section 112 (lèse-majesté) cases [PPT has simply lost count of this avalanche of cases]. His combined sentences in ongoing cases total roughly 29 years, and he has not been granted bail despite all cases remaining under appeal…”.

The report adds that there are four additional Article 112 cases “pending, which could further extend his imprisonment.”

Thai Enquirer comments: “This prolonged pretrial and post-conviction detention raises serious human rights concerns, particularly regarding freedom of expression, the right to a fair trial, and the principle of presumption of innocence.”

It also raises questions, again, about Article 112, Thailand’s most political law, and the injustices perpetrated by the politicized judiciary that handles these cases.
