Ultra-royalists Halloween

When the old queen’s death was (finally) officially announced, it was demanded that Thailand be monochrome. Some of that has been rolled back, but ultra-royalists have taken to using dress as a measure of loyalty. It is the loyalty Halloween.

As Prachatai reports, after ultra-royalist Akkarawut Kraisisombat posted photos of three student activists and “threatened violence against them,” the students have filed a police complaint.

Their “complaint stems from a 27 October post by Akkarawut saying that he will hunt down people who put up signs saying “We mourn citizens’ freedom” on electricity poles after the death of Queen Sirikit… He also posted pictures of people he believed put up the signs.”

In comments, other ultra-royalist thugs “encouraged Akkarawut and his group to attack people who put up the signs or to use the royal defamation [lese majeste] law.”

The three students “feel unsafe and concerned at becoming the subject of a witchhunt.”

Prachatai adds:

Members of ultra-royalist groups have made threats against pro-democracy activists several times since the government imposed a period of national mourning for Queen Sirikit, asking members of the public to dress in black and white for 90 days and to dial down festivities.

One activist also claimed that plainclothes police have followed them. That activist wrote that they were surrounded by police when “the royal procession carrying the remains of Queen Sirikit passed.

Other official witch hunting is mentioned in the article and there is the implication that police are tipping off ultra-royalists.
