Phromson’s quest

15 03 2026

Thai Lawyers for Hmman Rights provide an update on Article 112 political prisoner Phromson Wirathamchari. Readers will recall that his appeal on a lese majeste case was recently rejected.

On 13 March 2026, lawyers visited the Thanyaburi District Prison to see Phromsorn, who is being held in custody under Article 112. This followed the Appeals Court’s upholding of his 2-year and 10-month prison sentence and the Supreme Court’s denial of bail pending appeal.

Phromson began a hunger strike on the evening of 9 March, the day of imprisonment, demanding amnesty for all political prisoners who are prisoners of conscience.

The lawyers said their client “looked brighter but still tired, with dark circles under the eyes, but overall still appeared energetic.” Still fasting, prison nurses have been checking on  Phromson, with blood sugar levels stable, but blood pressure lower. Phromson’s oxygen levels are low, meaning some dizziness. Phromson has been drinking a lot of water.

Phromson shared a message with friends outside, expressing thanks and calling for a society of true sharing, compassion, and understanding. On prisoners of conscience, Phromson said their expressions were aimed at improving the country, albeit with diverse perspectives, because humans cannot be forced to think alike. To move forward, diverse opinions and perspectives on humanity need to be heard. Therefore, granting amnesty to prisoners of conscience is crucial.
