People’s Party still under threat

5 02 2025

The Bangkok Post reports that the politicized National Anti-Corruption Commission (NACC) is still “investigating” whether charges should be pursued “against 44 former MPs of the now-defunct Move Forward Party who supported a proposal to amend the lese-majeste law.”

It is reported that “39 are still sitting MPs of the People’s Party, which was formed in August last year after the Constitutional Court dissolved Move Forward for advocating changes to Section 112 of the Criminal Code…”.

The NACC is said to be “pursuing an investigation into whether the MPs’ advocacy violated requirements for ethical behaviour by elected representatives, which could lead to a lifetime ban from politics.” The hopelessly biased agency’s “investigative committee is gathering facts, questioning witnesses and reviewing evidence to decide if the investigation should proceed.”

The watchdog committee for the ruling class “launched its inquiry in response to a petition lodged in February 2024 by lawyer Theerayut Suwankesorn. He had asked the Constitutional Court to order Move Forward to cease all campaign activities relating to its efforts to amend Section 112 of the Criminal Code.”

Indicating how the whole judicial system is rigged, that ultra-royalist petition was “based on the ruling by the court on Jan 31 last year, which said that advocating for changes to Section 112 represented a threat to the constitutional monarchy.” The Constitutional Court is the politicized protector of royalist interests. Those interests include the tycoons.

Given the People’s Party’s recent relatively poor electoral performances and the continuing efforts to punish and jail monarchy reformers, it may be that the ruling interests decide that the party and its supporters are no longer the threat they were. But royalists are a bunch of thugs, so we doubt they will show much sympathy or sense. That said, they have shown that they are deal makers….
