About 10 days ago we posted that that the politicized National Anti-Corruption Commission (NACC) was still “investigating” whether charges should be pursued against 44 MPs from the now-defunct Move Forward Party who supported a proposal to amend the lese majeste law.
The NACC has now reportedly “resolved to indict 44 former MPs … for breach of ethical standards over their sponsorship of a bill to amend Article 112 of the Criminal Code, or the lese majeste law.” 39 of these MPs have moved to the People’s Party.
It is reported that “in a Facebook post on Friday, People’s Party MP Rangsiman Rome said he had received a summons from the anti-graft body to be notified of the charges.” He said: “I don’t understand how sponsoring to amend a law is illegal, as it is the duty of an MP…. Besides, there are no laws prohibiting the amendment to Article 112.”
Written law has never been a barrier to ultra-royalists.
Rangsiman reminded readers that before the 2023 election, “the party had submitted its policy to amend the lese majeste law to the Election Commission, which did not rule it as a breach of ethical standards.”
He also acknowledged that he’s probably going to be gone from parliament: “I am well aware that my time may be limited, so in the meantime, I will continue to carry out my duties to the fullest…”.
This is a move that ultra-royalists see as an extinguishing of progressivism. No justice in Thailand, just royalism and anti-democracy. Puea Thai may be chuckling, but they know that they may be next as royalism re-establishes its hegemony post-2020. Bhum Jai Thai awaits their time to rule.
