Royal nationalism and militarism

Despite a debilitating illness, Princess Chulabhorn remains an ardent nationalist and militarist.

She recently launched something called “Hathaitip Fund with an emphasis on strengthening the security of frontline forces and communities along Thailand’s borders.” The fund is based at the taxpayer-funded Chulabhorn Research Institute.

The report states:

The Hathaitip Fund, established under the Chulabhorn Foundation, was created by a royal initiative to support the government, private and community efforts in preventing and addressing threats caused by unrest, natural disasters and other emergencies. It also aims to promote public security and enhance the quality of life for affected communities.

It is reported that she kicked in one million baht as initial funding. For a fabulously wealthy royal, that is a pittance, but it is the symbolism that is important.

By supporting the military and its sometimes outlandish claims about the border, she is underlining her right-wing credentials.

Of course, Chulabhorn has form on ultra-nationalism and support for rightist and royalist thugs, including the People’s Alliance for Democracy and, later, for the People’s Democratic Reform Committee.
